Hydrate is a measured, auditable, on-premise memory and efficiency layer for AI assistants. Codex is one of two runtimes where the full read-and-capture story is verified against the live runtime's own wire format: facts captured on one tool surface in the next prompt on the other. It is also Hydrate's default cross-family reviewer, the second opinion that checks what Claude wrote.
What works today
- UserPromptSubmit-style hook wired through the Codex CLI lifecycle.
- MCP server reachable as
hydrate-mcp; Codex CLI consumes it as a standard MCP client. - Shared canon and facts with any other Claude Code / Cursor / Cline / Gemini CLI session on the same machine.
Known limits
- Codex has no PreCompact event, so there is no compaction hook to wire. Hydrate distils before a clear instead.
- Recent Codex releases require a flag to run hooks headlessly;
hydrate doctorreports it when your version needs it. - Running the pinned Codex CLI alongside the ChatGPT desktop app can put two versions on one model cache. Hydrate self-heals the conflict, but matching the versions is cleaner.
